Now in September and it was crisp.  Did a larger painting but it refuses to download the right way round.  This little one is 'post Robin Childs' course.  Much freer - in acrylic and nice.

Wet weather

The weather was wet - just plain wet this week and Magda, Jo  and I struggled a bit.  But in this quick wee watercolour the effect of the rain splodges makes for atmosphere.   I started a second rather tight watercolour but hope next week to do something more interesting now I have the measure of the landscape.

Underfall Yard and Jetty

The weather was drizzly and damp.Juliet  was game.   Fine weather for acrylics - they dry less quickly but not a good painting day in terms of results.   I did'nt really choose what to paint - it happened.  I had hoped the rain would disssolve the paint rather like 'view from allotments' below - but I was  using  special acrylic paper so I guess it had a plastic coating.   The paint was sticky but quick and easy to use.    The allotment view was painted on a large paper sketch book.

Bright light in the Repair Yard

Looking towards the Create Centre

This week Juliet,  Jo and I went to the Cumberland Basin and the Underfall Yard.    It is  hard to get organised to paint  outside but  I think just going every week is a good start .

Despite humid weather we went down to Underfall Yard with Oil paints. Discovered earlier  this week thunder flys  like oil paint so left a Field in Barrow Gurney looking like a fly paper. There was a striking big boat on the dry dock so it was worth the effort.
The propeller was  difficult to draw and it was hard to believe all the blades were the same size because as they twist 'mobius strip' style into their housing - perspective and angle create challenges.   But of course they must be the same size - otherwise boat would not steer straight.

Festival of the Sea this weekend so plenty of boats around.

Down to the Underfall Yard but with white paper and a pencil          how  could a watercolour be anything but traditional when you start out with pencil and paper.  Last week's was much more exciting because  I painted over another painting.   Next week I will do an underpainting - then another on top.  It is a lovely place to     paint.  There is a gentle buzz of activity all around.  Blokes who like building things discuss the pros and cons of solder and drink tea.

art group

There are now 4 of us meeting just once a week to draw and paint down in the Cumberland Basin.   I took watercolour because it was just too hot to dabble with oil and white spirit and I painted on top of another painting.  Now in oil I do this all the time and oil is opaque and covers the under painting when you need to and can be scraped back too,  to  reveal the underpainting.  I did'nt think it would work in watercolour but I think  it did.   The result it - interesting.

The top painting is of the Underfall Yard.  The painting underneath is one of the few watercolours   I have kept because I prefer oil.   Given the title of the blog - I will go back to oil pronto.
